Brainrot

Dear Parents,

We hope this message finds you well.
As language continues to evolve at lightning speed, it’s not uncommon to hear unfamiliar words flying about at home, in the car, or even in WhatsApp group chats.

“I’ve gyat to go” – Kim Kardashian. While it may be tempting to adopt this trendy vocabulary in an effort to bond with your children, we must offer a gentle warning…
Please don’t.

Not only might it cause some serious second-hand embarrassment, but certain phrases are best left to the experts, namely, the teenagers themselves.

To help you avoid potential social catastrophes, where you not just embarrass your children but also yourself, here’s a list of modern slang terms that you should kindly never say under any circumstances, no matter how “down with the kids” you feel.

  • ❌ Rizz / Rizzler – Used to describe someone with charm or flirtatious charisma.
  • ❌ Skibidi – Derived from a surreal internet meme; usually nonsensical.
  • ❌ Sigma – Refers to someone who’s proudly independent, like a “lone wolf”.
  • ❌ Sus – Short for “suspicious”; used when someone is acting strangely.
  • ❌ Bussin – Slang for something extremely tasty.
  • ❌ Brainrot – Refers to the effect of consuming far too much low-quality online content.

  • ❌ +10,000 Aura / -10,000 Aura – Gaining or losing imaginary “points” based on your vibe.
  • ❌ PMO – Short for “pisses me off.” Best avoided entirely.
  • ❌ Ate – Means someone did exceptionally well.
  • ❌ Acoustic – An ironic way of calling someone silly or foolish.
  • ❌ WOMP WOMP – Said to mock someone when they’re upset, mimicking crying noises.
  • ❌ Glazing – Excessively praising someone, often to the point of cringe.
  • ❌ Slay – Expresses admiration.
  • ❌ Mid – Means something is average or underwhelming.
  • ❌ Hits Different – Something that feels unusually impactful or better than expected.
  • ❌ Simp – Someone who is overly affectionate or devoted, often in a one-sided way.
  • ❌ Delulu – Short for “delusional.”
  • ❌ Facts / Real / Bet – Words used to express agreement.
  • ❌ I’m calling cap – Accusing someone of lying.
  • ❌ No cap / On God – Swearing you’re telling the truth.
  • ❌ Giving – Describing something that evokes a certain feeling.
  • ❌ Math is not mathing – Used when something doesn’t add up or make sense.
  • ❌ Girl Math – A humorous way of justifying spending habits.
  • ❌ Girl Lunch – A collection of snacks that doesn’t quite make a proper meal.
  • ❌ Talking Stage – The phase where two people are getting to know each other before dating.
  • ❌ Only in Ohio – Refers to something bizarre or inexplicable, as if it could only happen in a strange place.
  • ❌ Mog – To outshine or appear significantly better than someone else in looks.
  • ❌ Yapping – Talking nonsense, usually loudly and unnecessarily.

Language is a powerful thing. But in this case, wield it wisely, and perhaps leave the Gen Z / Gen Alpha slang to the Gen Zs themselves. Your children (and their ears) will thank you for it.

Kindest Regards,

Gen Z / Gen Alpha
